A group of women with a mutual passion for pets has challenged Tucsonans to raise $15,000 to improve the lives of the region’s homeless animal population.

Known as the SaddleBrooke Pet Rescue Network, the group of advocates already raised $15,000 for its annual “Payoff the Vet Debt” campaign, a multi-rescue event which aims to support pet rescue organizations across Tucson by paying off accounts at local veterinary offices. The funding is directed to pay for the bills of special needs animals, which can present quite a challenge for some rescues.

Now the group wants Tucsonans to raise an equal amount in matching contributions that will then be distributed to the “Payoff the Vet Debt” campaign.
Vet offices allow rescues to accumulate a bill for work performed, though the allowance can only go so far. Once an organization is cut off, rescues come to a “screeching halt,” said network president Leslie Rocco.

Donations are tax deductible and will be entirely applied to veterinary accounts of 11 different groups. Participating rescue groups include: Hope Animal Shelter, Lil Bit of Love, Lifeline Oro Valley Pima Paws for Life, RAD Rescue, Ruff Rescue, Saving at Risk Animals, SOS Cat Rescue and more.

Entering its sixth year of operations, the network has saved thousands of homeless pets. Last year, 95 pets were placed in homes, $33,080 was raised and volunteers have worked almost 5,000 hours. Over the years, the network has placed more than 800 animals in new homes, donated more than $85,000 and volunteered more than 23,000 hours.

“If you’re willing to step out of your comfort zone of the traditional ‘I just couldn’t bring them all home with me,’ you don’t have to think like that,” Rocco said. “Go to PACC and look into their eyes, and you’re almost compelled, thrown into doing something.”

The network began raising funds last Thursday, June 15, and will continue until July 15. Donations are accepted at payoffvetdebt.com, or by check at Lil Bit of Love, Payoff Vet Debt, 63457 E. Squash Blossom Lane, Tucson, AZ 85739. More information can also be found on the network’s Facebook page, as well as the Payoffvetdebt page.

“If a little group of six ladies on a board can raise $15,000, we think Tucson can do that too,” Rocco said. “We think Tucson has the heart for rescue animals, they just need to join the team.”
