Westworld: The Original Film Sensation

westworld.jpg

The original Westworld was about a robot world that people could pay to visit on holiday to live out their dreams. Whether it be fighting like a cowboy without fear of being hurt, or living in Roman or medieval times. Of course the robots turn evil and start hurting humans. The frightening Yul Brynner, who plays a cowboy, stalks the protagonist across all the worlds.

Robot cowboys sound brilliant, or at least they did until Cowboys & Aliens got released (haha). And they did work in the 1973 film Westworld.

In recent years HBO has remade the film as a series starring Anthony Hopkins.
We like to keep our programming here at Casa Video and Film Bar family-friendly, so we won’t be showing the HBO version of Westworld, but it is available to rent from our video store, and on Friday and Saturday nights you can get 2-4-1 rentals with the purchase of any 32oz or 64oz growler fill of craft beer or cold-brew coffee from the Film Bar.

Molecular Munchies will be our food truck for this evening.

Normally remakes send a shiver down our spines. But Westworld was such a great idea, that could have been so much more with more time and better special effects. So spanning it over a series, made by the mighty budget of HBO, and starring Anthony Hopkins should mean a show that's great in its own right.

The plot for the robot reboot was developed by the aptly named Bad Robot productions, the company of J.J. Abrams. And if that wasn't a big enough name drop, Jonathan Nolan – brother of Dark Knight director Chris Nolan – is onboard too. Anthony Hopkins plays the theme park's creative director and programmer in the reboot.

*Again, we like to keep our programming here at Casa Video and Film Bar family-friendly, so we WON'T be showing the HBO version of Westworld, but WILL be showing the original film that it's based on.
